Luoc and Trang Van Nguyen are no strangers to being named the top jewelers in the Tri-City area.
Van’s – now in business for 37 years – has won this category eight out of nine years in existence.
“I think people like us,” Luoc said in a very humble way. “We work hard – really hard.”
Luoc came to the United States from Vietnam soon after the Vietnam War ended in 1975, with barely a penny in his pocket.
But thanks to her tenacity and diligence, her efforts paid off.
He developed a passion for jewelry making while working at McVicker’s in Richland, which inspired him to open his own boutique. Trang, also an immigrant from Vietnam, walked into Luoc’s shop one day with a piece of jewelry to fix, and the rest is history.
Today, the store offers an impressive array of high-end, high-quality products from venerable brands. They are well known for their diamonds.
“We only stock the highest quality,” Luoc said.
Their bespoke design work is also a unique facet of the business, for which Luoc has a particular passion.
“He likes to see the happiness on the customer’s face when looking at his piece,” Trang said. It’s also a quick turnaround – usually just a day or two, which includes repairing jewelry or replacing watch batteries.
While the couple won’t be doing this forever (they hope family will take over one day), they’re not ready to move on just yet.
“I like to work,” Luoc said. “And I like people.”
