My friend Belle is one of the most fashionable and colorful people I know, so when it came time to search for the right birthday present for her, I knew it had to be right. Something playful and fun, but also trendy and recognizable among our circle of fashion-savvy friends. Almost instantly, I opted for a chunky, sparkly ring from BONBONWHIMS, the jewelry brand that took to Instagram and breathed some color and joy into my dreary fate-scrolling days.

I’ve always been a pretty classic props designer: a few thin gold necklaces, rings that I never take off, maybe a trendy earring if I’m on vacation. Last year, however, I lived my life almost entirely in sweats, so accessories and jewelry were the only opportunities to get creative when it came to showing off my personal style. As a result, I found myself gravitating towards more colorful and whimsical pieces. It was not enough to be fashionable; they had to make me smile too! There you go, my Explore Instagram page brought me to BONBONWHIMS and it was love at first sight.

“I started making costume jewelry for myself as an escape and creative outlet years ago to fill this creative space that my job lacked,” BONBONWHIMS Founder Clare Ngai told STYLECASTER. “I always had it in my mind to go for it, but the pandemic really gave me this unprecedented opportunity to sit down and turn my dreams into action. “

BONBONWHIMS started out small, but it didn’t take long for Ngai’s whimsical creations to take off. “At first, it was just DM to buy on Instagram and especially the friends and family who supported me. And I gave a lot of organic gifts to small designers and influencers who really took a liking to the brand; To this day, I’m still incredibly grateful to those who tried their luck with an unknown brand from the start, ”she shares.

“It grew very steadily and organically from there, and all of a sudden stylists, taste makers, buyers, editors stumbled across my profile and I feel so blessed to say it didn’t. ‘hasn’t stopped since,’ says Ngai.

In addition to the 18,000 loyal followers on Instagram, the brand has also caught the attention of some very stylish celebrities. Kylie Jenner was spotted in the Pop Drop earrings and the Custom Pearl Drops bracelet, and Sofia Richie recently stepped out with a stack of adjustable enamel drip rings on one hand and the Ling Bling ring on the other. .

“It’s really mind-blowing,” Ngai said when asked what it was like to see such famous celebrities wearing his pieces. “Think about all emerging and established jewelry brands trying to get product placement on someone of this caliber – whether organic or monetary – I feel beyond humility and flattery! I also want to thank the stylists, editors and other industry mavens such as Jill Jacobs and Patti Wilson and their teams who are there to champion small self-funded brands like mine. A little love goes a long way and can be life changing!

A quick scroll through the brand’s IG almost looks like a candy store, littered with colors and shapes and marked with a playful fire that a few months ago I feared had stopped burning in the world of jewelry, suffocated by the weight of a thousand big gold hoops from fast fashion brands.

“Having been a digital talent manager in my past life, I have always known that the power of social media is astounding,” says Ngai. “But seeing him firsthand from the other side and how he can shape and propel a small brand that doesn’t have actual physical footprints is a whole different story.”

As Ngai and her brand continue to gain recognition, she intends to give back to her community. The Ling Bling, a neon orange enamel ring topped with a fuchsia oval crystal, is a piece particularly dear to Ngai’s heart. 50% of profits from each Ling Bling network go to organizations that fight AAPI hate, including GirlTrek, Send Chinatown Love, and Stop AAPI Hate.

“Ling Bling is named after my Chinese name, ??, which has significant meaning for me and my parents, ”says Ngai. The launch of this new ring collided by coincidence with the horrific shootings that took place in Atlanta as well as the ongoing anti-Asian-American sentiment in the United States, I thought, being in a privileged position – and also a woman of color and an immigrant from China: I had to do something concrete to help and give back to my own community by donating 50% of the proceeds from the ring to charities that actually do the work.

The ring (and Ngai’s generous sentiment) was more than well received by her supporters. “I remember crying all week because of the horrible acts that happened that week, as well as the overwhelming support and love I received from the BONBONWHIMS community. ,” she says.

For my friend’s birthday present, I opted for a glittery pink heart-shaped ring with a B — and if you think a more perfect ring exists, I highly doubt it. Can I guarantee that this piece will be trending in a few years? No, no, I can’t. But will it bring joy to my friend at a time when fantasy doesn’t come so easily? Absolutely, and for this reason, BONBONWHIMS is a must-have store.
