New Hampshire jewelry store attacked with smoke bomb

A man set off a smoke bomb at a jewelry store in the mall in Salem, NH.

He entered the store on the first floor of the Rockingham Park Mall and asked about the jewelry, according to a press release the Salem Police Department posted on Facebook. The incident happened around 6 p.m. on January 5.

“The store owner, concerned about the suspicious nature and actions of the male subject while in the store, refused to remove the jewelry from the cases,” police said. “At one point, while standing by the registers, the man knelt down and set off a smoke bomb. The store owner ran around the counter, grabbed the device and threw it into the main mall area. The suspect stood aside for a few moments before fleeing.

The mall was evacuated. No injuries were reported, but the incident caused damage to both the store and the mall.

While fleeing, the suspect threw a bag and other clothing. The Nashua Police Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit examined the bag and found “additional devices and powder,” according to the statement. The suspect was described as being in his late 30s and about 6ft tall. He reportedly spoke English and Spanish.

Police have not released the name of the store and it is unclear whether any jewelry was stolen.
