Suspect arrested after Nassau County jewelry store robbery, police say

A Long Island man with a history of jewelry theft has been arrested after he allegedly attempted to steal a tray of merchandise from an area store, police said.

Nassau County Police investigators say 20-year-old Bay Shore resident Kobeen Castillo Orellana walked into Forever Diamonds on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21, asking to see a jewelry tray behind the counter.

Police say Orellana grabbed the jewelry tray and walked out of the store without paying, prompting an employee to follow him into the parking lot, at which point he fell while trying to retrieve the merchandise.

The employee refused to seek treatment on the spot.

Police say the investigation found Orellana was responsible for the incident, and he was later located at his Bay Shore home, during which he became combative with officers trying to caution him on sight, and allegedly kicked an officer.

After a brief struggle, the officers were able to apprehend Orellana.

Further investigation into Orellana revealed that he was also responsible for an earlier robbery at Kay Jewelers on Sunrise Highway in September.

Orellana has been charged with:

  • Grand larceny in the second degree;
  • Grand larceny in the third degree;
  • Two counts of assault in the second degree;
  • Resist arrest.

Orellana is due for arraignment on Monday November 22 at Hempstead First District Court.
