BRATTLEBORO – A man suspected of robbing Evan James Ltd. Diamond Jewelers & Goldsmiths was held in jail without bond for aggravated assault.

Cheldon Greene, 44, of Brattleboro, was arraigned on multiple counts related to the July 29 cases in Windham Superior Court, Criminal Division.

According to an affidavit, the Brattleboro Police Department responded to a domestic assault report in December 2021. The victim told police she let Greene into her apartment and he got very angry then grabbed her by the head and neck.

“She said she thought he was going to break her neck and kill her,” the affidavit reads. “She said it made her feel choked up and she had trouble breathing and things got blurry.”

The victim told police that Greene let her go and ran away, then called police.

According to a separate affidavit, Brattleboro police responded to a burglary alarm at Evan James’s home in May. Police said several pieces of jewelry were stolen, a display case was smashed and some displays were moved. The suspects entered by breaking a window.

On June 2, police learned that Evan James had been robbed again.

“The suspects entered through the same window and stole several thousand dollars worth of merchandise,” the affidavit states, noting that Greene is suspected of involvement in both burglaries.

Store owner Evan James told police he estimated the damage to his store was around $4,000 and the stolen merchandise was worth around $50,000.

Surveillance footage from the Latchis Theater and Evan James helped identify the two suspects. A search warrant led police to find clothing Greene allegedly wore during the burglary.

Greene faces two counts of burglary, unlawful mischief and robbery. For those charges, bail was set at $20,000.
